Ralph Breaks The Internet Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The Wreck-It Ralph Sequel

A theatrical sequel to an animated Disney movie is a rare thing. In fact, it's only happened once before. Twice if you count Fantasia 2000. Ralph Breaks the Internet brings back the video game characters of Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope Von Schweetz and sends them to explore the world of the internet. How does the sequel stack up to the original? The official CinemaBlend review gave the new movie four out of five stars and our own Eric Eisenberg felt that, while it may not be quite as good as the original Wreck-It Ralph, it was still a great time spent with great characters.

The narrative doesn't quite have the same tight structure/organization that the first film did, doing a lot more bouncing around from place to place road movie-style, but it remains solid on the immense strength of its character development.

As with the best of Disney's animated films, the movie isn't simply "for kids" as it deals with some fairly serious topics that the youngest viewers might not understand on first viewing, but their parents certainly will. The setting of the film is a bight, shiny new playground with the physical representation of the internet built to look like a massive technological city, with every name you know from Google to Pinterest represented as a building. But the movie isn't about that, it's about Ralph and Vanellope, and their relationship, and that's where most here would agree the movie shines, though we disagree about just how much.

Not everybody at CinemaBlend fell in love with Ralph Breaks the Internet. Managing Director Sean O'Connell feels the sequel really suffers in comparison to the original. He doesn't feel the new movie is bad, just disappointing.

Man, I wish I liked Ralph Break The Internet more than I actually do. As a huge fan of the original, I appreciated more time in the presence of Ralph and Vanellope. Wreck-it Ralph was such an original, inventive and sentimental story, and it actually felt like the sequel had the germ of a perfect idea -- sending the engaging franchise leads into the vast Internet. So what happened? The creativity is missing on Ralph Breaks the Internet, as the mission to retrieve Vanellope's steering wheel from eBay felt forced and thin. And the product placement throughout the story wasn't Meta, it was tacky. The laughs and heart are dialed back here, so while Breaks isn't a bad movie (by any stretch), it drastically pales in comparison to its immediate predecessor.

While Sean didn't feel that Raph Breaks the Intenet was a worthy sequel, with everything in the film feeling less than Wreck-It Ralph. His opinion is not universal. CinemaBlend project manager Cody Beck actually felt the sequel exceeded the original, thanks, in part, to a continuous stream of laugh moments and references to both Disney and internet culture.

Ralph Breaks The Internet is an even better journey into the Wreck-It Ralph universe than its predecessor. It's full of laughs for all ages and is not shy about poking fun at past Disney films and archetypes. Plus bonus jokes and easter eggs for avid Disney fans or anyone who has witnessed the evolution of the internet.

At the heart of Ralph Breaks the Internet is a story of friendship. Many fell in love with the story of Ralph and Vanellope. It's the reason the sequel exists in the first place, but CinemaBlend News Director Jessica Rawden felt that ultimately the sequel's constant focus on the brands of the internet doesn't do that relationship any favors.

Gamers will still find plenty of the fun nods present in Wreck-It Ralph in its follow-up Ralph Breaks The Internet, but as the story moves into the world wide web, the continual branding somewhat tarnishes the satisfying friendship story between Ralph and Vanellope. Stick around for the post-credits, though. They're a blast.

As the resident CinemaBlend Disney expert and also the Games editor, it would seem fairly obvious that the original Wreck-It Ralph was a particularly special film for me. In the end, I have to say I really enjoyed the sequel, and if it doesn't reach the level of the best Disney films, that's only because the best Disney films, like Wreck-It Ralph, have set a pretty high bar.

Ralph Breaks the Internet isn't quite as good as the first, though that might be only because there's now an expectation of greatness. It's funny, heartwarming, and I'm going to have to see it again just to catch all the Disney Princess jokes that I missed due to audience laughter.

It's certainly true that the "branding" that is present all over the film is a bit overdone, but ultimately that's just window dressing. Almost none of it is actually important to the film. What is important is Ralph and Vanellope and the ultimate message the movie is trying to convey. When that message takes center stage, Ralph Breaks the Internet is as good as the original, as good as Zootopia, as good as anytime Disney has had something important to say. However, Ralph Breaks the Internet feels like a movie of two halves, and the first half is a zany road movie that takes a bit too long to get to its ultimate goal, which is the second half with the important things to say.

Also, while the fourth wall adjacent portion of the movie that sends Vanellope among Disney's Princesses has been part of the marketing, there's luckily a lot more than has been shown in the trailers, and it's all hilarious. It's also not simply there for strictly punchline reasons, as the film takes a serious look at its own legacy and takes its licks where necessary regarding the parts of Disney history that maybe haven't aged well.

In the end, it feels like most of just arguing over exactly what degree of quality Ralph Breaks the Internet actually has. Nobody is calling it a bad movie. It seems likely that most everybody will enjoy the time they spent with it. In the end, the only question will be whether you like it or love it.

Keanu Reeves Has Revealed John Wick 3s Official Title

Keanu Reeves Has Revealed John Wick 3s Official Title

In recent years, Keanu Reeves has left arguably his biggest mark on the cinematic landscape as John Wick, assassin extraordinaire. Both 2014's John Wick and 2017's John Wick: Chapter 2 were critical and commercial successes, and production is currently underway on the third installment. However, rather than following in its predecessor's footsteps by simply being called John Wick: Chapter 3, Reeves revealed that the third John Wick movie will be officially called John Wick 3: Parabellum. When asked what the Parabellum refers to, Reeves responded:

Prepare for war. It's part of that famous sentence, 'Si vis pacem, para bellum,' which translates as, 'If you want peace, prepare for war.'

Keanu Reeves dropped this latest update while speaking with ComingSoon about his upcoming movie, Siberia. Of course, parabellum is also type of automatic weapon, so considering the kind of world John Wick lives in, that makes this title even more fitting. But going back to Reeves' explanation, John Wick has never been one to shy away from retaliating against those who've done him wrong, and since John Wick: Chapter 2's saw him going on the run, it sounds like our deadly protagonist will be diving into his biggest conflict yet in John Wick 3: Parabellum. Whether he starts it himself or gets dragged into it remains to be seen.

After killing Santino D'Antonio on Continental grounds, which is a big no-no in the assassin community, John Wick was declared excommunicado at the end of John Wick: Chapter 2, thus stripping him of his access to the hotel and underworld resources. Making matters worse, the High Table doubled the bounty that Santino had placed on John's head and offered it globally. After being given a Marker by Winston, who also delayed announcing John's new status for one hour, made a run for it. John Wick 3: Parabellum will see John attempting to escape New York, and Keanu Reeves also revealed during the interview that part of the story sees John seeking out Halle Berry's character, Sofia, for information on the High Table. Methinks those members of the High Table will soon be facing a wave of John Wick-branded retribution.

Along with Sofia, John Wick 3: Parabellum will introduce Angelica Huston's The Director, Asia Kate Dillon's The Adductor, Mark Dacascos' Zero and Jason Mantzoukas' Tick Tock Man, to name a few. As for returning faces, Ian McShane's Winston, Lance Reddick's Charon, Laurence Fishburne's The Bowery King, Ruby Rose's Ares and Common's Cassian will all be returning. Chad Stahelski and Derek Kolstad also reprised their directing and scripting duties, respectively.

John Wick 3: Parabellum hits theaters on May 17, 2019, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more updates. In the meantime, look through our 2018 release schedule to learn what movies will come out later this year.

Deadpool 2: What We Know About The X-Force From The Comics

Deadpool 2: What We Know About The X-Force From The Comics

Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, is one of the most skilled mercenaries in the Marvel universe, but even the fourth wall-breaking anti-hero needs to be a team player sometimes. In his 2016 movie, the Merc with the Mouth recruited Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus to help him rescue Vanessa from the clutches of Ajax (you may know him better as Francis) and Angel Dust. For Deadpool 2, the eponymous protagonist is taking things to the next level and forming the X-Force, as revealed by the full-length trailer released yesterday. Sure the team name may sound derivative, but for the X-Men film series, this has been a long time coming, particularly since an X-Force movie has been in development since 2013. We have less than two months to go until Deadpool 2's release, but now that we know for certain that the X-Force will appear in the movie, now's as good a time as any to briefly go over the team's comics history.

In contrast with the X-Men, who are a more traditional superhero team, the X-Force is willing to take more extreme methods to get the job done. Introduced in New Mutants #100 and created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, the X-Force was formed by Cable after the New Mutants disbanded, and their original purpose was to battle the Mutant Liberation Front, which was led by Stryfe, Cable's arch-nemesis. The other X-Force founding members included Cannonball, Copycat, Shatterstar, Feral, Boom-Boom and Warpath. However, like most superhero teams, the X-Force lineup has varied over the years, and later notable members included Siryn, Sunspot, Domino, Colossus, Forge and Psylocke The X-Men also formed its own X-Force branch to permanently deal with threats against mutants, and that team's roster included Deadpool and Wolverine. However, it's worth noting that Deadpool already had years of rapport established with Cable from their partnership, much to Cable's displeasure.

In any case, you can count on most versions of the X-Force taking a militant approach when dealing with threats, whether they only target mutants or human innocents as well. You're not going to turn to the X-Force to deliver PSAs or give kids life advice on the side. Interestingly enough, X-Force barely any presence in other media. The team was mentioned in Marvel Anime: X-Men and appeared in Deadpool's ending in the video game Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but that's it. So when Deadpool 2 is released, this will be the team's first major appearance away from the printed page. Given that most of the previous X-Men media projects have been geared towards younger fans, it's probably wise that the X-Force's big debut was saved for an R-rated movie.

Which brings us to the cinematic version of the X-Force. Until yesterday, no specific plot details for Deadpool 2 had been revealed, but we now know that the basic story will revolve around Wade Wilson protecting a pyrokinetic mutant kid from the time-traveling Cable. Even with his powers and talents, Cable is too much for Wade to deal with by himself, so he's turning to others to help him out. Although Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus are returning in Deadpool 2, it's unclear if they'll actually join the team or will help out in a different way. The people we do know for sure will be part of Deadpool 2's X-Force are Zazie Beetz's Dominio and Terry Crews' Bedlam, as well as Shioli Kutsana, Bill Skarsgard and Rob Delaney's characters. Judging by her powers, Kutsana is likely playing Surge. Delaney is only listed as someone named Peter, while Skarsgard seems to be playing Shatterstar. Assuming Deadpool follows in the footsteps of the source material, then Cable will eventually join the X-Force, too, and that will set the stage for the X-Force movie, which is being written and directed by Drew Goddard.

Deadpool 2 opens in theaters on May 18, and the X-Force movie is reportedly beginning production this October. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about both projects, as well as the rest of the X-Men film franchise.
