Robert Redford Retiring After His Next Film, The Old Man And The Gun

There are certain actors whose mere presence in a film confers a certain level of esteem and prestige. Robert Redford is one of those actors. Over his half a century in Hollywood, Robert Redford has starred in some all-time great films, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men, The Sting and Out of Africa. Now the legendary actor has decided to hang it up. Robert Redford will be retiring from acting after his next film, The Old Man & the Gun. He explained his decision, saying:

Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [I'll] move towards retirement after this 'cause I've been doing it since I was 21. I thought, Well, that's enough. And why not go out with something that's very upbeat and positive?

The 81-year-old actor has decided that it is time to walk off into the sunset at this point and get that happy ending that Sundance never did. As he told EW, Robert Redford has been acting for a very long time, and nobody could blame him that he has had enough of it and is ready to be done. He seems content with his decision and it sounds like Robert Redford found the perfect film to go out on too with The Old Man & the Gun.

The Old Man & The Gun reunites Robert Redford with his Pete's Dragon director David Lowery. The film tells the true story of Forrest Tucker, a career criminal who would rob banks, get caught and sent to prison, only to escape and do it all over again. He did this into his 70s. The film appears to have a fun sort of Catch Me if You Can vibe to it, and it sounds like the nature of this story helped Robert Redford to be comfortable with his retirement decision. The film is also something of a poetic end to the actor's onscreen career considering that so much of it was defined by his roles as charming criminals.

Robert Redford stars as Tucker in the film, opposite a cast that includes, Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck and Elisabeth Moss. You can check out the trailer for The Old Man & the Gun in the video below:

While Robert Redford didn't entirely close the door on acting again, he seems pretty firm on it. However, he is not quite so definitive when it comes to directing. In addition to his storied career in front of the camera, Robert Redford has had success behind it as well. His directorial debut, Ordinary People, netted him his first and only Academy Award win. In his interview with EW, Robert Redford was noncommittal about his future as a director, not ruling out a tenth film.

So although he is done in front of the camera, there is always the possibility he could return behind it. If not, I don't think anyone could say that he hasn't earned a well-deserved retirement. Beyond just the films he acted in or directed or produced, Robert Redford founded the Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival, the yearly event that advances smaller, independent films into the public consciousness.

Guardians Of The Galaxys Michelle Yeoh Responds To James Gunn Firing

Since the controversial firing of Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn after inappropriate tweets he penned over a decade ago surfaced, much of the cast have shown an outpour of support for Gunn. The director acknowledged his past mistakes and publicly apologized for the rude comments he made over Twitter, but Disney has been firm in their decision to fire him. This has put the fate of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in question, as it's now indefinitely on hold following the drama. Crazy Rich Asians star Michelle Yeoh, who played Aleta Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is the latest star to weigh in on the situation. In her words:

I was shocked, horrified that we can allow something like that to happen. You're talking about things that he said in the archives. If he had said it yesterday, or today, or something like this then you can make a big fuss but why dig up something now? I don't understand at all. It's so unnecessary, what good does it do?

In her comments to Yahoo! Movies UK, Michelle Yeoh echoes similar sentiments expressed by other cast members of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Last month, an open letter in support of the director was written and signed by the principal cast of the film, asking that James Gunn be reinstated as director for Vol. 3. However, the letter didn't change the studio's mind, thus continuing a discussion about whether the debacle was worth Disney's verdict to punish Gunn for actions made quite some time ago.

The tweets were reportedly dug up by alt-right commentators who started the online backlash against James Gunn, pleading Disney to fire him from future Guardians endeavors. Michelle Yeoh and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast seem to believe that the tweets of Gunn's past are uncharacteristic of him today as a person and as a filmmaker who has led them into two successful MCU films.

Before his firing, James Gunn had been working on the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With some rumors reporting that Marvel would be throwing out his script as well, actor Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer, has shared uncertainty about whether he would be willing to come back for a sequel or work for Disney again following this controversy. Bautista has been the most vocal in the situation, recently firing back at Disney on Twitter by comparing the studio to the Trump administration. The situation is messy to stay the least, especially as far as future Guardians of the Galaxy films are concerned.

The Hulk Originally Could Have Turned To Dust In Avengers: Infinity War

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on a serious roll in Phase Three, as every new blockbuster has been met with critical and box office success. The last decade of filmmaking will come to a head when Avengers: Endgame arrives in a matter of days, picking up the narrative from the shocking ending of Infinity War. The Russo Brothers broke fans hearts by wiping out half of all life, as moviegoers watched countless fan favorite characters fade to dust.

I didnt know until I saw the movie. For one take, I did disappear, and then the other one I didnt.

Well, this is wild. Bruce Banner/Hulk has been in every Avengers movie, so it's hard to imagine Endgame without the big green guy. But it looks like that was on the table for a while, as The Russo Brothers had Mark Ruffalo film a dusting scene of his very own.

In the end, all of the OG Avengers managed to survive The Decimation, along with supporting characters like War Machine, Rocket, Okoye, and Nebula. But it turns out that Bruce Banner could have perished, as Mark Ruffalo filmed both endings for his character. Ruffalo recently revealed this, saying:

Mark Ruffalo's comments to Yahoo are sure to puzzle cinephiles, given how Infinity War and Endgame were filmed directly after each other. As such, Hulk's fate presumably was only a question for a limited time. Because The Russo Brothers had the scheduling nightmare of working out shooting for Endgame, and would need Ruffalo to clear up his schedule in order to play Banner/Hulk alongside the rest of the living heroes.

The ending of Avengers: Infinity War was truly devastating, as the fandom didn't expect Thanos to win and exterminate so many iconic characters. And it seems The Russo Brothers experimented a bit with who would be a victim of the snap, and fade to dust before our eyes. Instead of merely being phased into a rock in the Hulkbuster armor, Bruce Banner could have also faded to dust from within the suit. And with that ending, Hulk wouldn't have gotten another chance to face off against the Mad Titan.

Luckily, Bruce Banner survived the snap, and should have a meaty role alongside the rest of the survivors when Avengers: Endgame finally hits theaters. Fans are especially eager to see Hulk return to the screen, as he was largely absent in Infinity War after losing a fight in the film's opening scene. As a reminder, you can check out that scuffle below.

Merchandise from Avengers: Endgame hints at a rematch for these two powerful characters, so it's a good thing that Hulk wasn't dusted during The Snap. It's also poetic to see the original team reunited in the upcoming blockbuster, allowing The Russo Brothers to end the narrative that started back with Iron Man in 2007.
