Widows probably isn't a movie that you've been paying much attention to and you may not have even heard of. Based on the first trailer, that's likely about to change. The newest film from Steve McQueen (no, not that one) has an absolutely remarkable cast and the trailer is incredibly intense and exciting. Watch Viola Davis and company as they find themselves in an incredibly dangerous, potentially, life-threatening, situation that nobody, except themselves, thinks they're ready for. Check it out.
The "widows" of the title are played by Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, and Cynthia Erivo. Each one is married to a man who is involved in a robbery. Liam Neeson and Jon Bernthal are among the thieves, but it doesn't look like they'll be in much of the movie as the trailer shows all four of them dying while trying to escape. Since the four men are gone, a debt they owe passes to their families, leading Colin Ferrell and others to come calling looking to collect. The widows decide they need to fight back, and while it doesn't appear any of them is quite comfortable in this role, they have little choice.
In addition to the names above the cast includes the likes of Robert Duvall and Daniel Kaluuya. Though we only see them briefly in the trailer we can guess they're more important to the overall story. Only bringing in actors like that for small roles would be a terrible waste.
The cast of Widows is incredibly impressive but so are the names behind the film. Steve McQueen (not that one) was nominated for an oscar for best Director for his work on 12 Years a Slave and he did take home a statue when the film won Best Picture. Widows is his first feature film since the win. He also co-wrote the story with Gillian Flynn, the author of Gone Girl, another intense, dramatic, thriller. It was also a book, and a movie, that didn't quite go where you expected, which means that perhaps a twist or two could be in store for us in Widows as well.
Widows will be hitting screens on November 16, and with such a prime release date one certainly has to wonder if Widows is expecting to get noticed during awards season. The film certainly looks and feels like the sort of film that could have some potentially award-worthy performances. When Viola Davis is on the screen you might as well assume an award nomination is a possibility and the trailer certainly wants to remind you the director previously made an Oscar-winning movie. We'll see how strong a follow-up Widows is in November.
