That tradition looks like it's continuing later this year with the release of Mid90s, a nostalgic trip to Los Angles during that titular decade to explore life, childhood and the process of growing up. A new trailer for Jonah Hill's upcoming movie has just debuted, and it offers up amazingly nostalgic look at Southern California life back in the 1990s. Check it out, below, to see it for yourself.
Talk about a trip down memory lane. Mid90s centers on a young boy (Sunny Suljic) navigating social life in Los Angeles during the middle of the 1990s, hence the title of the film. Finding acceptance in a community of skateboarders, the movie explores youth culture in LA during that defining era and showcases its effect on his own development.
One thing that jumps out from the Mid90s trailer is the way the movie has balanced relatively unknown actors with more established names in the industry. Though somewhat unfamiliar faces mostly pad the movie, its supporting cast includes notable names like Manchester By the Sea's Lucas Hedges, Alien: Covenant's Katherine Waterson, and The Carmichael Show star Jerrod Carmichael.
Another thing worth noting, while we are on the topic of nostalgia, is the quality of the camera and the style of color that Jonah Hill has opted to use on his new film. Intentionally using a dated style reminiscent of cameras used during the 1990s, Mid90s has a very specific aesthetic that makes it genuinely feel like a film that was produced in that era -- or better yet, makes it feel like home movies shot in that era.
If everything goes well and Mid90s ends up being as good as it looks based on this trailer, then this could stand out as another critical win for A24. The indie production house has slowly but surely carved out an interesting niche for itself with films like Hereditary, Ex Machina and Swiss Army Man, emphasizing a quality streak that few competitors can match these days. It looks like Jonah Hill has another potential winner on his hands, but we will have to wait and see.
