Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Has A Killer Rotten Tomatoes Score

Like it or not, Rotten Tomatoes has become an important source for determining how a movie's being received among critics. Aggregating reviews from across the interwebs, users can either look through this collection of reviews one by one, or they can simply look at the Tomato Meter and see what percentage score the movie has overall. For the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it's doing quite well on the Rotten Tomatoes front, as it's currently ranked 100%.

Does this mean that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the few perfect movies in existence and lacks any flaws? No, not at all. What it does mean is that it's definitely being appreciated by critics, as all the reviews for Into the Spider-Verse on Rotten Tomatoes, going off the site's metrics, are positive. And don't think this is one of those instances where there are only a few reviews up for Into the Spider-Verse and eventually the score will decrease as more reviews arrive. So far there are 47 Into the Spider-Verse reviews up on Rotten Tomatoes since the embargo lifted on Wednesday.

I suspect that by the time Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse finally hits theaters, it won't have a 100% score anymore, but even if a few negative reviews trickle in, it's looking like this is on track to being one of the most acclaimed superhero movies ever. That's all the more impressive when you take into account that while the genre has grown incredibly popular over the last two decades, there are few animated, theatrical superhero tales to enjoy.

While Sony has been partnered with Marvel Studios over the last few years to feature Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse marks the studio's second recent venture into adapting the Web-Slinger's mythology on its own, the first being Venom, which launched a live action cinematic universe that will include movies like Morbius and Kraven the Hunter.

It's also worth mention that even before Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse reviews started coming in, clearly Sony was happy with the product that the public will get to lay eyes on in a few weeks. There are already plans to make an Into the Spider-Verse sequel, as well as a spinoff starring various female Spider-heroes.

Just like the live action Spider-Man movies, Peter Parker is appearing in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but this time he's not the star of the show. That honor belongs to Miles Morales, who's just getting started on his own Spider-Man career and will be mentored by this Peter, who hails from another dimension. They'll be joined by other Spider-heroes who come from alternate realities, like Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker and Spider-Ham. The movie's villains include Kingpin, Green Goblin and Prowler.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's Director Explains Why He Exited World War Z 2

Few films have experienced a development process quite as rocky as World War Z 2. The follow-up to the troubled 2013 zombie thriller has experienced a tumultuous road to the silver screen, going through various iterations in the years since it was announced. One version of the film was, at one point, going to be helmed by A Monster Calls director J.A. Bayona, but the filmmaker stepped down two years later when he realized that he wasn't right for the global zombie apocalypse sequel. During a recent interview about his work on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Bayona explained:

We were working on that project for around a year, and we had a great idea. We were very excited. We designed great set pieces, and we were very excited with the direction we were taking with the film, but somehow, we never found a way to connect it all together. There was a moment where we were about to start production, and I wasn't ready. I told them and I said, 'Listen, I'm not the right guy for this. There's probably another guy who's able to take care of this in a way that the movie will not get affected,' so I decided to step out of the project.

So it doesn't necessarily sound like J. A. Bayona lost faith in World War Z 2 or departed because of creative differences. Instead, his remarks to Den of Geek make it seem like he took a look around and decided that he just wasn't the right filmmaker to execute that particular vision. That's not much to work with, but it at least tells us why Bayona decided not to work on the movie.

Of course, World War Z 2's development has become one of those stories that we have checked in with periodically over the course of the last few years. The most recent incarnation of the project will reportedly bring Brad Pitt back as Gerry Lane, with Fight Club director David Fincher stepping in behind the camera. However, Brad Pitt's commitments to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will keep him busy for the foreseeable future, and David Fincher's Mindhunter is also gearing up for its second season, which means the odds of seeing World War Z 2 anytime soon seem reasonably slim. This has led to a debate over whether or not the film is even worth pursuing anymore, which is apparently something that even J.A. Bayona had to grapple with years ago.

Our Thoughts On The New Spider-Man: Far From Home Villain Theory

People are still trying to put the pieces together of how Avengers 4 will address the climax of Avengers: Infinity War, but the wheels of moviemaking don't have time to wait. Marvel Studios has to get Phase 4 underway, and thus we have Spider-Man: Far From Home. Plot details are top secret, but the biggest news is that Jake Gyllenhaal reportedly signed on to play Mysterio, the main villain. While this has yet to be officially confirmed, there are theories that spoiler master Tom Holland may have let slip that another villain will also be appearing in the sequel: Hydro-Man.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is currently filming and Tom Holland posted a video from the set joking that he did all his own stunts while his stunt double gets blasted by a gush of water in the background. The purpose of the video was to promote a chance to win a visit to the set, but that didn't stop fans from taking the water theme and connected it straight to Spider-Man's exclusively water-based villain, Hydro-Man.

Now just about anything can cause a blast of water. Hell, Mysterio -- a master of special effects -- probably has at least a dozen ways to make that happen. However, the idea of Hydro-Man in the movie is interesting, and it does actually provide some opportunities that we haven't seen in the movies yet.

Hydro-Man is one of the lesser knowns of Spider-Man's villains, falling somewhere on the C-list. His name is Morris Bench and he used to be a crewman for a cargo ship. However, he was thrown overboard during a battle between Spider-Man and Namor the Submariner while an experimental generator was being tested in the ocean. (Obviously the best place to test dangerous, experimental technology.) The energy from the generator mixed with the ocean gave Morris the ability to become and manipulate water. The best way to think about him is that he has literally the same powers as Sandman, but with water. Like all Spider-Man villains, Morris blames the Wall-Crawler for his transformation and swears vengeance.

Hydro-Man doesn't go much deeper than that, and his schemes usually revolve around making money. He's not the most interesting villain, but his powers make him an extremely dangerous foe, adding to his appeal for a movie. MCU Spider-Man has never fought a villain with that kind of power before, and it would make a great test for Spidey as he grows as a superhero. Beating a guy who can't be punched is a pretty good superhero challenge.

The theories of Hydro-Man's inclusion are slightly helped by the fact that the character was rumored before Tom Holland's video. Marvel reportedly showed off Far From Home concept art in which Spidey was battling Hydro-Man through the canals of Venice, according to this YouTube video. Obviously this is an unfounded rumor from a single source, and by itself, it shouldn't be taken without lots of salt. However, the set design in Holland's video does happen to feature Venice memorabilia and the movie is set in Europe, for what it's worth.

This is not to say that Hydro-Man would be the main villain. He reeks of secondary villain status, and it's hardly unusual for superhero movies to have more than one villain. Spider-Man: Homecoming had Vulture as the main villain, while the Shocker and Tinkerer backed him up. It could be that Hydro-Man fills out this role for Mysterio. They aren't two characters that traditionally go together, but Marvel Studios has never been a slave to the comics before, and Hydro-Man is a character that could benefit from an update.

Hydro-Man is kind of a boring character, but that doesn't mean he's completely useless. The 1990s Spider-Man cartoon got some decent mileage out of him by reworking him as Mary Jane's ex-boyfriend who never really got over her. His main goal was to "win" her back, despite her total lack of interest and Spider-Man's repeated interference. The character contributed to a pretty big plot twist in the final days of the show, so it's not like the character can't be utilized to effect. However, it should be noted that Hydro-Man was only used because the show wasn't allowed to use Sandman.

The fact that Hydro-Man isn't prominent in the comics might be an advantage though. It means that there is more freedom to change and alter the character to fit into the movie. Vulture, Shocker and Tinkerer are not characters that get a lot of spotlight in any medium, so Homecoming was able to bring something fresh to the table. Hydro-Man has mostly appeared in cartoons, so he's in a similar boat (pun INTENDED).

Hydro-Man may not be the most interesting villain to ever ruin Spider-Man's day, but his powers make him a cool choice to see on the big screen. Plus, his lack of mainstream appeal offers something that people haven't seen in a Spider-Man movie yet. Whether the character actually shows up is anyone's guess at the moment. Regardless, Spider-Man: Far From Home, with or without Hydro-Man, swings into theaters on July 5, 2019.
