Top Gun 2 Is Rounding Out Its Cast
Fans of Tony Scott's Top Gun likely already know that the film had one of the most interesting casts of the 1980s. Between actors like Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Rick Rossovich, Tom Skerritt, and Michael Ironside, the story of Naval aviators training to be the best was very much of its time. Now, with Top Gun: Maverick aiming to hit theaters in 2019, it looks like director Joseph Kosinski is trying to do something similar by assuming its own unique ensemble.
A new Deadline report on the cast of Top Gun: Maverick promises something exciting and different from what we have seen in the Top Gun universe before. With that in mind, one of the first new additions to the cast is The Last Ship actor Charles Parnell, who will portray a Navy admiral.
Additionally, To Gun: Maverick has also enlisted The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies actress Thomasin Mackenzie, to portray the daughter of Jennifer Connelly's character.
Thirdly, the film has also brought Insecure actor Jay Ellis onboard for a supporting role as well. Though little is known about the exact nature of his role, we do know that he will play a pilot -- presumably a young cadet at the Top Gun academy in San Diego.
The fourth actor added to the Top Gun: Maverick ensemble is GLOW star Bashir Salahuddin. In a shift to an area of the naval world that wasn't seen all that much in the original film, Salahuddin will portray an engineer.
Next on deck is Assassination Nation actor Danny Ramirez. Like Jay Ellis, Ramirez will also play a pilot. They will be joined by actress Monica Barbaro, who will portray the Top Gun universe's first female pilot. Put that all together, and it looks like some big changes are on the horizon for the Top Gun world and the diverse array of pilots who inhabit it.
All of these newcomers will join an already impressive cast. This ensemble includes returning actors Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, who will reprise their respective roles as Maverick and Iceman. Moreover, it was also recently announced that Only The Brave actor Miles Teller would take on the role of Goose's son, while Set It Up star Glen Powell would also join as a Top Gun pilot codenamed "Slayer." Powell was actually in the running to play the son of Maverick's best friend before Teller got the part, but he made a good enough impression to get this role as a consolation prize.
